At what age should I have my first gyn exam?

It is recommended that girls should see their gynecologist between the ages of 13-15 years old. Pelvic exams should be done at the age of 21 years old or sooner if you began engaging in sexual activity, unless there is a medical problem.

What is the most effective Family Planning method?

There are many types of Family Planning method, from natural to artificial, and not every method will be suitable for you. During the consultation, our doctor will determine which method will suit you best.

What is the cheapest family planning method?

The cheapest family planning method would be the natural methods such as the temperature method, cervical secretion monitoring method, withdrawal, and abstinence.

Meanwhile, the cheapest among artificial method includes condoms, pills, IUD, etc.

Is the Perineal Repair painful?

During the procedure, anesthesia will be administered. However, discomfort or pain can be experienced during the recovery period; analgesics, cold compress, and sitz bath (a warm-water bath that covers the buttocks and hip) can help relieve the pain.

How often should I have a pelvic exam or a PAP's Smear?

A PAP smear, together with a pelvic exam, is recommended to be done every three years for women ages 21-65. If the PAP smear is combined with HPV testing, women aged 30 and above can consider testing every five years.

How can I protect myself from STDs/STIs?

In order to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases/infections, you should:

  • Practice monogamy or reduce number of sex partners

  • Wear a condom

  • Get tested and vaccinated (vaccines are available for Hepatitis B and HPV)

What foods are restricted for pregnant women?

Most food and drinks are not harmful during  pregnancy but here are some that you need to be careful or should avoid:

+ Undercooked meat, poultry and eggs - pregnancy causes an increased risk of bacterial food poisoning to the mother.

+ Raw, undercooked, contaminated seafood

+ Seafood high in mercury such as King Mackerel, Swordfish, Bigeye tuna, etc.

- too much mercury harms the unborn baby

+ Unpasteurized milk 

+ Alcohol

+ Caffeine - limit to 200mg per day

When can I get injected with Tetanus toxoid?

For pregnant women who was not yet given a tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine(TT-CV):

  • 2 doses: one month apart, second dose should be two weeks before delivery (protection lasts 1-3 years)

When can I listen to my  baby's heartbeat?

You will probably hear your baby's heartbeat in the 9th or 10th week of pregnancy with the use of a fetal doppler, though it may still vary.

When can I know the baby's gender?

Your baby's gender can be determined by an ultrasound and most doctors schedule an ultrasound during the 18th to 21st week of pregnancy. But a baby's gender can already be determined as early as the 14th week.

When should I come back for my follow-up?

The follow-up check-up is usually scheduled in the following month but when you experience discomfort or pain please contact your doctor immediately.
